Members of Students for Justice in Palestine occupy Mary Lyon Hall overnight during sit-in

Since the Israeli state declared war on Hamas militants in October, universities around the world have seen their fair share of student-led organizing in support of Palestine.

Mount Holyoke College is now one of these institutions after a chapter of the international movement Students for Justice in Palestine began meeting early in November. The group led a rally, march, vigil and sit-in for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, Nov. 9, with several students occupying Mary Lyon Hall overnight.

Theta Chi allegations spark protests across UMass Amherst’s campus

Students from the University of Massachusetts Amherst led protests on their campus this weekend in response to allegations of sexual assault made against fraternity Theta Chi. A post on the anonymous social media app Yik Yak alleged a first-year student at the university had been drugged and assaulted by a member of the fraternity at a Theta Chi party on Saturday night, Sept. 18. The following Sunday, Sept. 19, around 300 people gathered outside the fraternity house to protest the member’s involvement in the sexual assault allegations.

Students mobilize against the rise in tuition costs/tuition increase

Ailey Rivkin FP ’22 and Gaby Barber ’23 began circulating a petition to reverse the College’s decision to raise tuition by $5,520 on the morning of Wednesday, April 7. As the authors of the petition, Barber and Rivkin wrote, “We … find it unacceptable that Mount Holyoke College has chosen, in the midst of a global pandemic, to raise the comprehensive fee — which consists of room and board, tuition, and the student activities fee — to $73,098.”
