Leading up to Valentine’s Day, professor of dance Charles Flachs was in his office finishing a day’s work, while his wife, professor of dance Rose Flachs was at home, feeling under the weather. Illnesses have been sweeping throughout campus this February, but despite the stress and sneezing, the professors still found time to share their love story.

We set up first-years Aleasha* and Daphne* on a movie date in Skinner Hall. Aleasha described herself as a “dynamic and dedicated person looking for someone caring who she could make laugh.” Daphne, a self-described film studies nerd was looking for someone to watch movies with and be close to. It can get lonely in the Pioneer Valley. To address this, we at MoRomance are sending MoHos on blind dates with fellow Five College students to find love! After all, isn’t that what the consortium was created for? We set up Mount Holyoke first-year Suzie* and Hampshire second-year Stephen* for our inaugural Five College date. Suzie described herself as an outgoing, energetic and vivacious person seeking someone who she can be comfortable and intimate with. Stephen, a musician, was looking for someone who loves music and can appreciate his offbeat sense of humor. Their shared love of movies and the arts seemed to make for a perfect match. We sent them on a date to the Smith College Art Museum followed by bubble tea in Northampton. The two met in the lobby of the art museum, and here’s what happened…

This week, we set up senior Virginia* with first-year Vita* on a movie date in Clapp to watch “Romeo + Juliet.” Vita described herself as an open-minded person who is fascinated by the world. As a self-described hopeless romantic, Virginia wanted someone she could talk about the depths of her soul with. Vita, who wants to know a little about everything, seemed like a perfect fit! First-year Taylor* was looking for someone she would be happy to spend time with. Elliott* — also a first-year — was looking for a partner with complimentary vibes. We at MoRomance are working diligently to help MoHos find new love, or at least a new pal this Valentine’s season. This week we set up “cute but anxious” sophomore Frida* with junior Georgia,* who described themself as “funny but quiet.” The two seemed like a good match. Both said that they love art, so we thought an arts and crafts date in Mead’s Golden Pear would be perfect. The pair arrived to find the common room stocked up with origami paper, coloring pages and Shrinky Dinks for an afternoon of crafts and romance.

Tinder? Tired. Bumble? Boring. MoRomance? Magical.This week, we matched Hannah*, a sophomore, who described herself as “spunky, fun-loving and artistic,” with Rose*, a “silly but thoughtful” junior. On paper, they seemed like a perfect match. Both told us that they like dance, music and similarly wholesome activities. Rose called her romantic history “limited,” while Hannah referred to her own as some “friendly flirting.”
