On Saturday, April 8, the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team faced local conference rival Springfield College. The Lyons saw three different players score, while also featuring strong performances from two different goalies. Springfield bested MHC 16-5 at the close of the con- test.

Springfield captured a 4-0 lead early on in the match, however, Charlotte Wagner ’17 put a stop to their run with a goal of her own. Kaitlin Braz ’18 notched a goal late in the first half and opened the Lyons’ scoring in the second half, bringing the Lyons within seven points. She also had a game-high of five ground balls, as well as three turnovers. Sandwiched between Springfield goals, Wagner scored her second of the contest at 20:36. She assisted teammate Mazzie Meotti ’19 just twenty seconds later for Meotti’s first goal of the game. Springfield finished the game with the four final goals. Taylor Hough ’17 also posted an impressive performance on the defensive line with two ground balls, a draw control and a turnover. In the net for the Lyons, Isa Rodriguez ’17 earned two saves and Mia Wysocki ’20 six.

Braz, who was also recently recognized by the Mount Holyoke Athletics Department as Lyon of the Week, said of the team’s performance, “Springfield is definitely a well respected opponent, but I think we surprised them with our unyielding efforts.” She also praised the team’s defensive efforts as she believes the team “never gave up defensively and forced Springfield to look to pass for most of their goals, as they had a difficult time penetrating on 1v1 drives.” According to Wagner, who was a dominant force on the offensive line, the team “worked well together and definitely surprised Springfield by keeping the score low for the first half.”

Lacrosse returned to action on Wednesday, April 12 for a NEWMAC game vs. Coast Guard Academy, winning with a score of 11-6. Next on the schedule, the Lyons face MIT at home on Friday, April 14.
