Senate reconvenes amidst staffing changes, elects new officers

BY ANNABELLE SHEA ’23

The SGA Senate held their first meeting of the spring 2020 semester on Jan. 28. Items on the agenda included a review of Senate guidelines, a spring 2020 events preview and a vote on the new chair of halls and senate vice president positions.

Rather than vote to elect a new vice president approved by the executive board, senators voted to suspend the constitution and allow the responsibilities of the vice president to be delegated among members of the executive board for the duration of spring semester. The justification for this shift in leadership — according to SGA Senate president Juniper Glass-Klaiber ’21 — was that the primary responsibilities of the SGA Senate President ended in the fall semester.

After a panel discussion with the three candidates, SGA Senators voted to elect Dannye Carpenter ’20 to become the new Chair of Halls. The responsibilities of the position include coordinating hall senators, sending weekly emails and filling hall senator vacancies.

Senators expressed to the candidates their concerns regarding the lack of student involvement and participation during weekly SGA meetings. Proposed solutions to this issue included increased communication between hall senators and Community Advisors (CAs) and increased senator availability through office hours.

Senate meets weekly on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Room of Blanchard Campus Center.
