Mount Holyoke German and Russian departments to be placed on ‘sunset’ timeline

On Thursday, March 30, students and faculty gathered in the Language and Culture Commons in Ciruti Language Center for the German and Russian & Eurasian Studies department teas. Following statements from students and alums speaking in support of the two departments, Provost and Dean of Faculty Lisa Sullivan announced that the College had adopted a plan to ‘sunset’ the two language departments over the next few years.

A newly proposed bill in the Massachusetts House of Representatives would allow in-state incarcerated people to remove between 60 and 365 days from their sentences in exchange for the donation of their organs or marrow, according to Insider. Though the bill — entitled “act to establish the Massachusetts incarcerated individual bone marrow and organ donation program,” according to CBS Boston — has not yet been passed, it has struck controversy among leadership within the state.

Residential advisors and fellows gathered in Chapin Auditorium alongside other community members on the evening of Nov. 9 to determine the future of the Mount Holyoke Collective and their union status on campus. Officials from the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1459 chapter read aloud the individual votes to the hushed room. The silence was broken by applause when it was announced that the student workers had voted unanimously to formalize their union membership.

The Spanish, Latina/o and Latin American studies department hosted an interdepartmental panel titled, “What’s Happening in Latin America” on Thursday, Feb. 20. The panel aimed to address the events that have taken place in the region over the past few months. Professor Justin Crumbaugh moderated as Professors Adrianna Pitetta, Dorothy Mosby, Lowell Gudmunson, Stephanie Huezo and William Girard spoke on their individual areas of study in relation to the ongoing protests, governmental transitions and U.S. immigration policies that have shaped current events in Latin America.
