What you should know about: golf tournaments

BY KASS LAWRENCE ’22

The Lyons’ Golf team concluded their fall season after their last tournament on Oct. 12-13, placing fifth out of nine teams at the NYU Invitational. This year, golf has a total of five members coached by Tim Walko in his ninth season at Mount Holyoke College.

“A golf tournament is usually held over two days, with everyone playing 18 holes both days,” Courtney Qiu ’22 said. She added that, depending on the tournament, players will either start at the first hole at different times or they will all start on different holes at the same time.

“Tournaments can usually last around four to six hours, depending on the pace of play,” Qiu said. The team competes against anywhere from seven to 17 teams at each tournament.

“My favorite moment of the season so far was shooting my personal best score during our first tournament,” Qiu said. “It was the first tournament so I didn’t have any high expectations, but I was playing so well and having so much fun with the people I was with.”

Qiu was also named to the Liberty League Women’s Honor Roll, a member conference of the NCAA’s Division III, this season.

Lyons Golf will start their spring season in March 2020.
