Squash defeats Smith, falls to Northeastern over weekend

Mount Holyoke squash advanced to 2-2 for the season after concluding this past weekend’s play with both a loss and win. 

The Lyons saw a clean sweep against local rival, Smith College, earning 3-0 wins in each of their matches. Brandy Williamson ’18 led the top of the ladder defeating her Pioneer opponent 11-2, 11-1, 11-4. Second seed Lessly Portillo ’19 also saw a 3-0 victory by an 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 margin. Tanishka Sachidanand ’19 also saw a solid win from the three spot, edging out her competitor 11-5, 11-8, 11-0. 

Rose Minichiello ’17, Amanda Lee ’17,  Kirina Gair-MacMichael ’18,  Syry Mitchell ’17, Namrata Ahuja ’18 and Emma Lynch ’18 also saw significant margins in their victories. 

In the second game of the day, the Lyons fell to Northeastern 5-4 in a series of competitive matches. 

Williamson began play from the top seed, posting a 11-5, 9-11, 11-4, 12-10 victory. Ragini Ghose ’19 also saw a hardfought victory at the two spot, winning by an 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6 margin. 

The other MHC wins against Northeastern came from Allison Shilling ’17 at the number four seed (11-2, 11-2, 11-1), and Minichiello from the sixth seed (11-9, 11-6, 12-10). 

Mount Holyoke returns to play this coming Friday to face Bates College at home.
