What you should know about Riding

BY KASS LAWRENCE ’22

The Lyons equestrian team is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary at Mount Holyoke College.

The varsity team started this year’s season on Sept. 21 at the Preseason Tournament of Champions, and has not placed below second against any competing teams this year. At a typical competition, equestrian is divided into differing riding events such as open flat, intermediate flat, dressage and fences. Each rider places and points are accrued due to each placement.

“The most interesting aspect of my sport is that anyone can do it,” Tori Fletcher ’22 said. “There are many riders on the team who did not know how to steer a horse or even how to trot a horse. But being on the team and taking lessons, people are able to learn and achieve.”

Fletcher finds the sport rewarding. “Not only am I working with an amazing team and amazing coaches, but I am also working with animals that have emotions and their own set of opinions,” Fletcher said.

Last year, 15 riders qualified and more than six placed at Regionals. Individual riders got the chance to go to Nationals as well.

“My most successful moment on the team was probably this semester so far,” Fletcher said. “I’ve competed in three horse shows this semester and received two fifth place ribbons and one first place. I am proud of my accomplishments, as I worked hard to make improvements on my riding.”
